BIOS Mode

To find out the BIOS mode do this:

Open msinfo32

Open msinfo32 by typing msinfo32 in Windows search.

Go to System Summary

Find BIOS Mode

Find the line called "BIOS Mode". If it's UEFI, then you are good to go.

Legacy to UEFI

In case your BIOS Mode isn't UEFI, you can either use MBR2GPT (might not work for everyone) or reinstall Windows.

Open PowerShell as Administrator

Validate disk layout

Paste this command:

Validate
mbr2gpt /disk:0 /validate /allowFullOS

Convert disk

Paste this command:

Convert
mbr2gpt /disk:0 /convert /allowFullOS

Switch firmware to UEFI

Make sure the output includes: Before the new system can boot properly you need to switch the firmware to boot to UEFI mode!

MBR2GPT: Disk layout validation failed for disk 0

Fix 2: Windows reinstall

Requires a USB flash-stick that is at least 4 GB in space.

Prepare USB

Get a USB that is at least 4 GB in space.

Download Windows Media Creation Tool

Download the media creation tool from one of these sites:

Create ISO

Open the Windows media creation tool. Press Next a couple times until you reach "Choose which media to use" and select "ISO file".

Download Rufus

After the media creation tool is done, download Rufusarrow-up-right.

Configure Rufus

Open Rufus and set:

  • Partition scheme: GPT

  • Target system: UEFI (non-CSM)

Disable CSM in BIOS

Go to BIOS, Boot tab, find "CSM" or "Compatibility Support Module" and disable it.

Install Windows

Boot from your flash drive and install Windows. Remove and create partitions as needed during installation.
